How to Choose a Coffee Gift Set in Switzerland
Most coffee gift sets are a mug, a sachet, and a ribbon. Here's what actually makes one worth giving — and what we put in ours.
Coffee is one of the easiest gifts to get wrong. Not because people don't like it — almost everyone does — but because most gift sets are built to look good in a photograph rather than to be used. A single sachet, a branded mug, some straw filler. It gets opened, admired, and put in a cupboard. A coffee gift set is worth giving only if the person receiving it can actually brew something with it the next morning.
Five Things That Separate a Real Gift Set from a Hamper
A 20g sachet makes two cups. That isn't a gift, it's a sample. Look for a set with enough coffee to live with for a few weeks — enough to form an opinion, not just a first impression.
Beans alone assume the person already owns the right equipment. A set that includes the brewer works for someone who has never made that style of coffee before — which is usually the point of a gift.
You rarely know someone's exact taste. A set with several coffees lets them find their own favourite rather than making you guess — and it turns one gift into three things to try.
Ground coffee is only useful if it matches how it'll be brewed. Check the set lets you pick — whole bean for a grinder, or a grind that suits the brewer that comes in the box.
A box that arrives crushed undoes the whole thing. Rigid packaging with a fitted insert matters more for a gift than for your own weekly bag of beans.
Brewing instructions in the box make the difference between a gift that gets used and one that sits there because nobody's sure where to start.
A Generic Coffee Hamper vs. A Set Built to Be Used
| Criteria | Generic Coffee Hamper | A Set Built to Be Used |
|---|---|---|
| Amount of coffee | One or two sachets, often 20–50g total | Several hundred grams — weeks of actual drinking |
| Brewing equipment | None, or a mug that isn't a brewer | A working brewer included, ready to use immediately |
| Choice of coffee | A single blend, usually unnamed | Multiple named coffees so the recipient can compare |
| Filler | Straw, tissue, chocolate to pad out the box | A fitted insert that holds each item in place |
| After the gift | Nothing to repeat — the set is a one-off | They know which coffee they liked and can reorder it |
What's in the PHIN Starter Set Premium
A PHINOI phin filter — the traditional Vietnamese brewer, aluminium, reusable, no electricity and no pods — plus 100g each of all three of our single-origin coffees: Hanoi Haze (100% Arabica, floral and smooth), Da Lat Dawn (60% Robusta / 40% Arabica, balanced), and Saigon Drip (100% Robusta, bold and dark). Everything sits in a fitted die-cut insert inside a rigid gift box, with brewing instructions included. You choose one grind for the whole set: whole bean, or medium-fine for the phin filter. CHF 43.00.
Who This Set Actually Suits
Someone who likes coffee but has never brewed Vietnamese-style. The filter and the instructions do the explaining for you.
Not another gadget. A brewing method they almost certainly don't own yet, and three coffees they can't buy at the supermarket.
A phin filter needs no machine, no counter space, and no power — which makes it genuinely useful in a first flat or a small kitchen.
Pre-order the Gift Set
The Starter Set Premium is currently out of stock and available to pre-order. We ship as soon as the next batch arrives in Winterthur, expected 22 September 2026. If you need a gift sooner than that, the phin filter on its own is in stock now.
FAQ
The set is on pre-order. The next batch is expected in Winterthur on 22 September 2026, and orders ship as soon as it lands. If the date you need it for falls before that, email us at gruezi@phinkafi.ch and we'll tell you honestly whether it will make it rather than letting you find out late.
300g in total — 100g each of Hanoi Haze, Da Lat Dawn, and Saigon Drip. Brewed in a phin filter at roughly 20g per cup, that's around fifteen cups, which is enough to properly get to know all three rather than just taste them once.
No — the set ships with one uniform grind across all three bags. You pick either whole bean, if the person you're giving it to owns a grinder, or medium-fine, which is the right grind for the phin filter included in the box. If you're unsure, medium-fine is the safer choice, since it works straight out of the box.
No. The phin filter sits directly on top of a cup and brews with nothing but hot water and gravity — no machine, no electricity, no paper filters, no pods. That's what makes it work as a gift for someone whose kitchen setup you don't know.
Our coffee carries a twelve-month shelf life from the roast date, printed on every bag. For the best cup, it's worth using within a few weeks of opening a bag and keeping the rest sealed — see our guide on how long coffee stays fresh for the detail.
Yes. The PHINOI phin filter on its own is CHF 16.00 and is in stock now, which makes it a good smaller gift or a way to cover a date the pre-order can't reach. Pairing it with a single 200g bag — Saigon Drip at CHF 9.50, Da Lat Dawn at CHF 11.00, or Hanoi Haze at CHF 13.00 — gives you a working brew kit for less than the full set.
