A Gift That Gets Used

Coffee lovers are hard to buy for. They already own a machine, they already have a favourite bean, and a gift hamper with two sachets and a branded mug usually ends up in a cupboard. The gifts that work are the ones that give them something new to do the next morning: a brewing method they don't own, a coffee they can't buy at the supermarket, a recipe they haven't tried. Here are seven, sorted from small to generous.

Seven Gift Ideas, from Small to Generous

1. The Whole Ritual — CHF 43.00

Our Vietnamese Coffee Gift Set: a PHINOI phin filter and 100 g each of Hanoi Haze, Da Lat Dawn and Saigon Drip in a gift box, with brewing instructions. For someone who has never made Vietnamese coffee.

2. The Filter and a Favourite — from CHF 29.50

The phin filter (CHF 20.00) plus one 200 g bag of coffee. Build your own set — Saigon Drip if they like it strong, Hanoi Haze if they like it smooth.

3. The Secret Santa Gift — CHF 9.50–13.00

One 200 g bag: Saigon Drip (CHF 9.50), Da Lat Dawn (CHF 11.00) or Hanoi Haze (CHF 13.00). Well inside the usual Wichtel budget, and nobody else in the office will bring it.

4. The One They'll Finish — CHF 20.00–28.00

A 500 g bag of one coffee, for someone who already drinks Vietnamese coffee. Choose from our three, whole bean or ground for their brewer.

5. The Phin on Its Own — CHF 20.00

Just the phin filter, for someone who already has a coffee they love. It brews any medium-fine ground coffee, it's small enough for a stocking, and it lasts for years.

6. A Recipe to Go With It

Pair any bag with a recipe card: Vietnamese egg coffee with Hanoi Haze, or iced milk coffee with Saigon Drip. The gift becomes something to make together.

7. For the Whole Team

Gifts for colleagues or clients: several gift sets, one order. Write to gruezi@phinkafi.ch with how many you need and we'll reply personally.

Bonus: Skip the Machine

Every gift on this list works without a coffee machine. The phin sits on a cup and needs only hot water — so it suits any kitchen, including the ones you've never seen.

Why a Phin Makes a Good Gift

The phin is the traditional Vietnamese coffee filter: a small metal brewer that sits on top of a cup and lets hot water drip slowly through the grounds. No power, no pods, no paper filters, nothing to descale. It turns making coffee into a few quiet minutes rather than a button press — and it is a brewing method most coffee lovers in Switzerland don't own yet, which is exactly what makes it a gift rather than a duplicate.

FAQ

When should I order for Christmas?

Swiss Post standard delivery takes 2–3 working days and express 1–2. Post gets busy in December, so ordering a week or two before you need the gift is the safe choice.

Can I send the gift straight to the person?

Yes. Enter their name and address as the delivery address at checkout, and your own details for billing.

They don't have a coffee machine — does that matter?

No. The phin filter brews with nothing but hot water and a cup. That's why every gift on this list works in any kitchen.

Whole bean or ground?

Whole bean only if they own a grinder. If you're not sure, choose medium-fine: it is the right grind for the phin and works straight out of the box.

What's a good Secret Santa gift for a coffee drinker?

A 200 g bag of Saigon Drip is CHF 9.50 — well under the usual Wichtel budget, and a coffee most people in the office won't have tried. If the budget is CHF 20, the phin filter on its own gives them a new way to brew.

How long does the coffee keep?

Twelve months from the roast date, which is printed on every bag. Once opened, it tastes best within a few weeks.

Do you do gifts for companies?

Yes. For gifts to clients or a whole team, write to gruezi@phinkafi.ch with the number you need and the delivery date, and we'll come back to you personally.
